Overview

Madurai is an energetic, ancient city on the Vaigai River in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Its skyline is dominated by the 14 colorful gopurams (gateway towers) of Meenakshi Amman temple. Rameswaram means “Lord is Rama” in Sanskrit, an epithet of Shiva, the presiding deity of the Ramanathaswamy Temple. Considered one of the holiest places for Hindus in India and one among the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites, Rameswaram is also the closest point to Sri Lanka from India.
